Changing the ph of an aquarium

There is a common misconception in the aquarium hobby around ph. Many new aquarists will research the ph requirements of their fish, then test the ph of their water. When there is a difference, they assume that it's a large problem that must be fixed. Sadly, there is a whole market of products that will help them do that. ph up, ph down, ph 7, buffers, and on and on.

The reality is that the majority of tropical fish will live just fine in a wide range of ph's. Using chemicals to adjust the ph of water will almost always cause more problems that they help.

There are some fish that are quite sensitive to ph - saltwater fish and some types of freshwater cichlids. The best advice for fish that have very specific requirements is to use RO water and add the appropriate minerals back to obtain the desired ph.
